The house is quiet, except for the sound of the birds singing their morning song out on the palm trees. Sunlight seeps through the curtains, yet it seems all the world is still sleeping.
I tiptoe down the stairs careful not to make a sound. I stand in her doorway watching her sleeping. Her face somehow looks softer when she sleeps. Her hair draped over one eye, her lips pouting, a little arm draped over her favourite toy. Silent and still except for the rise and fall of her chest.
I lean against the door frame, taking in the peaceful vision before me. For five minutes I stand there, just watching. She somehow senses me there and before she even opens her eyes she is smiling. With a smile fixed firmly on her little face, she pushes her hair out of her eyes, opens her big beautiful blue eyes and says “Hello mummy”.
